What is the follow board pattern in casting and what it is used for?
Follow board pattern is actually not a pattern but a tool and a supporting structure used to support a pattern having a weak structure during ramming operation.

Follow board is mostly made up of wood material used to support fragile and thin patterns during sand ramming as shown in diagram (b) below.

The thin and delicate pattern breaks during sand ramming because of the ramming force. To protect the pattern from getting broken follow-board pattern is used in the sand casting process.
The follow board creates an actual parting plane for irregular patterns.
The pattern is attached to the board called the follow board and is used similarly to the match plate.
Follow board pattern is like a supporting tool for an irregular shape pattern that can break during the sand ramming process.
Follow board pattern finds application in producing master pattern in casting process.

Follow Board Pattern Advantages

"Follow board pattern" is not a pattern but a very important tool used in the sand casting process to support the pattern as shown in the diagram above (c) while the mould cavity has been created in the sand during the ramming of sand in the foundry.
During the creation of an impression or the mould cavity, a few patterns that are delicate or weak will break during sand ramming because of ramming force.
To solve this problem, follow board is used as a supporting structure as shown above in diagram (c) in the manufacturing process.
